Work!

Most students attending 最新麻豆原创 School will not go on to full time employment in the future. Some may manage supported internships, voluntary work or part time employment. I have covered a lot of Preparation for Adulthood themes over the last few months but let鈥檚 start with the 4 strands

• Work and Education
• Remaining healthy
• Community Inclusion
• Living Independently

The NDTi places work at the top. However, the government Preparation for Adulthood policies are for all young people approaching adulthood, so are not SEN specific.

So, what do you need to consider for those who will not be able to take up paid work? Again, I have covered Universal Credit and the Limited Capacity for work element, formerly known as ESA (Employment Support Allowance)

The government plans may impact on this, as they seek to reduce benefit costs. It remains to be seen what will happen, given that it is still at the consultation stage. I would urge those with students in Post 16 to look at this, particularly if your young person will need financial support. If you are claiming benefits, receive additional benefits for your disabled child, these will stop when they reach the age of 20 or if they leave education/training. If they are unable to work, you will need to apply for Universal Credit for them in their own right.

听Transitions, something many parents say are difficult for their children. Here鈥檚 an option.

鈥淥ur next free webinar for parents and carers is all about Autism and Transitions in Education settings and will be taking place via Zoom on Friday 23rd May from 9.30am-11am.

Your child might be preparing to move class, school or they might be transitioning to College or University which might be a massive change for you all. We want to help make this change as smooth as possible for you and your child so we’ll be sharing tips and resources that might help with starting this new chapter.

Access Fund: Newcastle families only.

The Access Fund is a grant to help disabled children and young people to participate in activities in their local community. 听This can be any daytime, evening or weekend activity that the child or young person enjoys whilst their parent/carer has a break from caring.听听 The Access Fund seeks to support children and young people to take part in inclusive activities alongside their non- disabled peers.

The maximum that can be applied for is 拢400 per annum, but this could pay for activities like swimming, horse riding, music, gym membership as examples.

The Access Fund is open to any disabled child or young person living in Newcastle aged 0-25 years (inclusive) and who meets听at least one听of the following criteria:

• Child or young person in receipt of Disability Living Allowance (DLA)
• Young person in receipt of the standard or enhanced rates of Personal Independence Payment Daily Living component
• Child or young person subject to an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP)

This fund used to be managed by the Nunsmoor Centre but is in the process of being handed over to another provider. Please direct any queries to the email address below in the meantime. I would appreciate any success stories too.

Summer Fayre.

You can鈥檛 have missed the big reveal; that we are having a summer fayre on Saturday 21^st June from 11-14.00.

Huge thanks to those of you who have sent in donations already. If every parent, carer and staff member donated 1 bottle, 1 item of chocolate or, for those who can a raffle prize I would be so grateful.

The fayre is a great opportunity to mingle with the school community socially in a place familiar to your child/young person. We have always received positive feedback on previous fayres.

Do you have a small business and if so, would you be interested in a stall at the fayre? We are not taking food stalls as we will have a BBQ and hot food available at a reasonable cost.

If you are interested, we offer these at a reduced cost to families so get in touch with me.

The next FoPHS meeting is on Wednesday 14^th May from 9.30-11.00.

I will send a TEAMS link on Monday. The focus is likely to be the fayre.
