Our Students’ Incredible Ben Nevis Challenge – With Thanks to Duke of Edinburgh

Ten of our students have returned from the challenge of a lifetime – taking on Ben Nevis.

Liam, Nathan, Kameron, Sophie and Travis from Northern Counties and Grace, Michael, Millie and Arthur from Hedley’s College were brave enough to take part as part of the scheme.

The Duke of Edinburgh scheme has offered incredible opportunities for our learners and young adults for years to boost their independence skills, resilience and team work. We have seen multiple groups of our students successfully achieve Bronze, Silver and even Gold through the scheme, providing memories and confidence for life.

The Duke of Edinburgh scheme is truly for every young person, regardless of disability. Every young person deserves to feel ambition, pride, and confidence in their abilities – and the Duke of Edinburgh scheme does just that.

It was an incredible opportunity to gain independence skills, push themselves, and achieve as a team.

So, how did our students find it and what impact did it have?

We caught up with them to find out what their experience was like!

“My trip to Ben Nevis had me anxious and excited. I had never been so far away from parents before, it was about a 6 hour drive.聽I had fun on my trip to Ben Nevis, as we all worked as a group and helped each other.

鈥淚 had never climbed a mountain before until that day, I was unsure if I could do it, but I was determined and I feel proud that I managed to get to the summit and raise a flag for Hedley’s college.

鈥淚 enjoyed seeing the scenic views and heights and I loved it when we made it to the summit, other climbers seen we had Duke of Edinburgh on our T shirts and chatted and gave us support with our climb!” – Grace

Our students also opted to fundraise for the challenge, raising an incredible 拢540, part of which they have chosen to donate to Duke of Edinburgh.

Sam Emerson, Operations Officer (Northumberland, North Tyneside and Gateshead) at Duke of Edinburgh added:

鈥淭he fantastic effort of the young people from 最新麻豆原创 have helped support other young people across the North East to access the Duke of Edinburgh鈥檚 Award, where cost or access to equipment would otherwise be a barrier.

“Reaching to the top of Ben Nevis is something they can be extremely proud about, and we have been celebrating their achievements at every possible opportunity. We hope that this incredible opportunity shows that no matter what your ability, anyone can do anything they put their mind to.

“By fundraising for the DofE we are then able to help other young people reach new heights, and conquer their own mountains, however big or small.

“Congratulations to all involved, and a huge thanks from the DofE to the staff, students, and supporters at the 最新麻豆原创 Foundation.鈥
